Log Creek Bridge south of Kingston

Log Creek Bridge work to begin soon

By Cindy Fickess

With spring approaching and bid openings on schedule for Feb. 19, the old deteriorating Log Creek Bridge south of Kingston on Highway 13 will soon be replaced.

Tonya Lohman of the Missouri Department of Transportation said the commission will more than likely choose the lowest bid upon approval at their March 2 meeting in Jefferson City. “Usually, there will be a notice to proceed issued,” she said referring to the commission’s actions.

Environmental issues will also affect the construction process, delaying the project for a six month period between the first of March through the first of August, so as not to disturb the habitat of the Indiana Bat. Also, during this time, the endangered barn swallows and cliff swallows are birds that are most likely to nest under the bridge, said Lowman.

The bridge originally built in 1930 was labeled as structurally deficient in 2012. MoDOT closed the bridge in 2014, after discovering that it had serious deterioration in the diaphragm, loss of bearings and bent girders. The bridge was then reinforced and reopened to one lane of traffic only.

During construction, State officials will provide a detour sign that will guide motorists around the work zone.

Caldwell County in the meantime will be replacing another bridge crossing Log Creek one mile west of the Highway 13 bridge, due to the damage of a fertilizer spreader. That bridge is contracted with Decker Construction and the company has already torn it down and will begin some preliminary work on it before starting the rebuild estimated to begin March 15. Presiding Commissioner, Bud Motsinger, said that this bridge will be constructed to allow the fiber optic cable to run underneath, a project that Green Hills Telephone is working on to bring the optic cable to Kingston.

Coordination between the county and the state will hopefully allow one bridge to be crossable during both constructions.
