Carolyn Cay Peterson

Carolyn Cay (Schmidt) Peterson, age 65, of Breckenridge, MO, passed away unexpectedly in Chillicothe on Aug. 31, 2016.

Carolyn was born on Oct. 18, 1950, in Greenfield, IA, to LaVerne Schmidt and Leila Mitchell Schmidt Zike. She grew up in Atlantic, IA, and graduated from high school there in 1968. She had attended Drake University. Carolyn and her husband had lived in Walnut, IA, before moving to Breckenridge in 1989.

Carolyn had worked as a farm manager and as an antique dealer and appraiser. In Hamilton, she had previously owned and managed the Penney Antique Mall, and had been an employee of the Missouri Star Quilt Company, where she had worked at the retreat center and had been in charge of marketing early on when the company was just beginning. Most recently, the last few years, she had been a business partner at The Barn Gypsies.

Carolyn was also an active member of the King of Kings Lutheran Church in Kansas City, where she was especially supportive of the church preschool, and the Twisted Sisters Quilt Club in Hamilton. She was a member and vice-president of the International Board of Questors and the president of Questors in the state of Iowa, and had been a strong supporter of the Mennonite community near Breckenridge.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her mother, Leila Zike.

On March 2, 1969, she married Wesley Peterson in Atlantic, IA. He survives of the home.

Additional survivors include sons, Scott Peterson (Natalie Mulligan) of Leawood, KS and Jay (Lindsay) Peterson of Kansas City; three grandchildren, Liam, Jackson and Jillian Peterson; father, LaVerne Schmidt of Greenfield, IA; sister, Christy (Bob) Savage of Blacksburg, VA; brother, David (C.J.) Schmidt of Grain Valley; two nephews, Ben and Brian Savage; and mother-in-law, Arvilla Peterson of Atlantic, IA.

A visitation was held on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2016, at the Hamilton United Methodist Church Family Life Center. A memorial service was held on Wednesday, Sept. 7, at the King of Kings Lutheran Church at 1701 N.E. 96th Street in Kansas City, MO 64155. Memorials may be made to the Chillicothe YMCA in memory of Carolyn.

Arrangements were under the direction of Bram Funeral Home in Hamilton.
