Henry Carolton Cox

Henry Carlton Cox, age 95 of Gallatin passed away on Friday morning, Dec. 24th, 2021, peacefully at his home. 

Henry was born on May 17, 1926, the son of John and Ethel Elizabeth (Jones) Cox in rural Daviess County between Gallatin and Breckenridge. He attended school at Gallatin and Jamesport. Henry was baptized at 10 ½ years old in the Grand River and became a member of the Gallatin United Methodist Church. He served in the United States Army, drafted during World War II, from 1945 until his honorable discharge on May 22, 1947. Upon entry he served in the Tank Division at Camp Roberts, CA, and then obtained the rank of Sergeant while stationed in the Aleutian Islands and Henry was awarded the World War II Victory Medal. On Oct. 16, 1954, Henry married Virginia Frances Murray, they were companions for 63 years until Virginia passed away on Nov. 14, 2021. They had made their home in Gallatin. Henry worked for Thompson Implement in Gallatin for 20 years, a John Deere Dealership where he was the parts manager until he retired in 1986. When Henry would get off work from Thompson Implement, he groomed Fred Wilcox’s Shetland ponies, as well as breed and raise his own horses, donkeys, mules, and hinnies. It was one of the hobbies that he loved. Henry also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and selling produce on the square in Gallatin. Henry had a good heart and would do anything for anyone. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Frances (Murray) Cox; one daughter, Virginia Marie Cox; one great-grandson, Barron John Noffsinger; and five siblings, Jody Harris, Raymond Cox, Jack Cox, Donnie Cox, Lewis Cox, and Dale Cox. 

He is survived by four children, Debbie Kramer (John) of Jamesport, Sally Black (Johnnie) of Gallatin,  Henry Lee Cox of Jamesport, and Janet Walker; nine grandchildren, Joshua VerHagen of Jamesport, A.J. (Melissa) Kramer of Arcadia, FL; David (Samantha) Kramer of Jamesport; Virginia (Brandon) Noffsinger of Jamesport; Kelsea (Trevor) Unruh of Arcadia, FL; Mary (Justin) Ensz of Jamesport; Anna (Jacy) Penner of Arcadia, FL; Kevin (Becca) Black of Gallatin and Katy (Mark) Gaines of Weston, MO.  Henry is also survived by eleven great-grandchildren, Keelie VerHagen, Jax Kramer, Tessa Kramer, Zane Kramer, Eugene Kramer, Evelynn Kramer, Ceder Unruh, Alathea Unruh, Bentley Noffsinger, Oliver Noffsinger and Austin Gaines.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Active Aging Resource Center in care of the funeral home. 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM, Thursday, Dec. 30th, 2021, at Stith Funeral Home in Gallatin. The family will receive friends from 6 PM to 8 PM, the evening prior at the funeral home. Friends may call after 11 AM Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial with full military honors will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Gallatin.
