Joann Smith, age 86, of Gallatin, MO, passed away Thursday, Nov. 23, 2017, at the Daviess County Nursing and Rehab.
Joann was born April 11, 1931, the daughter of Rodolphus S. and Helen (Spurlock) Jewell in Kidder. She graduated from Hamilton High School in 1949, and attended Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education. After college, Joann began her teaching career, where she taught for one year north of Jamesport at Prairie Center. She continued teaching elementary education at Kingston for five years and then in Hamilton, retiring in 1973.
Joann was united in marriage to Alvin K. Smith on Aug. 4, 1963, in Kidder, and the couple made their home in Hamilton. The Smith family moved to Gallatin and became part of the community. When called upon, Joann would substitute at the Gallatin Elementary School.
Joann was an active member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary of Hamilton for many years. Her hobbies included working with puzzles, doing genealogy research sewing, cooking, and tending her flowers and plants.
Joann was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 45 years, Alvin K. Smith in 2008; sisters, Jean Adkison and Janice Sparks; and two grandchildren.
Joann is survived by her four children, George Smith of Gallatin, Vince Smith of Chillicothe, Jodella Brungardt of Kansas City, and Myrna VanHoy Morris of Excelsior Springs; brother, Ross Jewell of Kidder; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great great-grandchild.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 27, at McWilliams Funeral Home in Gallatin. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at the Highland Cemetery in Hamilton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Active Aging Resources Center in Gallatin or the Highland Cemetery in Hamilton in care of McWilliams Funeral Home in Gallatin.
