Maurice “Stretch” Owen

Maurice “Stretch” Owen, age 85, a resident of Braymer, MO, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2019, at North Kansas City Hospital surrounded by family. Stretch was born on April 15, 1934, in Hawleyville, IA, to Hobart and Fern (Steeves) Owen. He was a 1952 graduate of Essex High School in Essex, IA. 

Following high school, he moved and began working in Kansas City, where he met and married Mary Ann DeBolt on May 16, 1954. They made their home in Braymer in 1957. 

From 1965 to 1981 he worked for Maynes, Inc. In 1981, he began a career with Shelter Insurance as an agent until his retirement in 1999. He was a member of the Braymer United Methodist Church, Past Master and 50 plus year member of the Braymer Masonic Lodge #135, and a member of the American Legion. Stretch served the United States for 12 years in the Iowa and Missouri National Guard.

Some of his many pleasures included hunting with his grandsons, collecting coins, working on clocks and fixing things. He was very good at telling a joke and never forgot one. Stretch especially enjoyed having coffee with friends at the Busy Bee. 

Stretch was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Lowell and Leonard; sisters, Eleanor, Evelyn and Mary Etta; son, Kenneth R. DeBolt; great-granddaughter, Bentley Silkwood; brother-in-law, John DeBolt; nephews, Harry Owen, and Robert and Michael Didericksen. 

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann of the home; sons, Marshall (Mica), Marty (Kelly), and Mitch (Nancy); brother, David (Ada Lou); sister-in-law, Gloria Owen; grandchildren, Miles, Madi, Macartney, Ben, Sami, Gena, Nate, Keely, Katie, Karder and Kenadee; great-grandchildren, Jaiden, Max, Marley, McKenna, Barrett, Camryn, Easton, Tyce, Liam and Aaron; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family members.    

The family will host a gathering of family and friends from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2019, at the Braymer United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. Cremation has been entrusted to Stith Family Funeral Home in Polo. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Braymer Evergreen Cemetery.
