Mildred Louise Barnes

Mildred Louise Barnes, age 97, of Lamoni, IA, passed away July 7, 2015. She was born on Jan. 9, 1918, the daughter of Ira Harrison and Rena (Mayes) Blevins in Caldwell County, southeast of Cowgill, MO.

She stayed home for a year after graduating from high school in 1936, then she went to nurses training in St. Joseph, graduating in 1939.

On June 30, 1940, she married William H. Barnes at the pastor’s home in Hamilton. They lived in Kellerton, IA before moving to Kansas City. She was a nurse at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, before moving to San Diego, CA, to be with Bill who was in the Navy. They moved to the Lamoni area in 1946 and purchased his grandmother Jamison’s family farm. They resided in the Evergreen Community.

Mildred was an active member of the Baptist Church. She sponsored several children through various Christian agencies throughout the world. She was a life long Sunday school teacher and helped with Vacation Bible School. Her other interests were gardening, cooking, reading, listening to gospel music, spending time with friends, and sharing the Lord.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Ira and Rena Blevins; husband, William H. Barnes; brother, Harold Blevins; brother, Wayne Blevins; and two foster children, John and Linda Baldwin.

Survivors include her children, Dennis Barnes (Jane) of Lee’s Summit and Judy Waddell (Charles) of Lamoni; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; six step great-grandchildren; one great great-stepson; two great great-grandchildren expected to arrive soon; two brothers, Clyde Blevins of San Diego and Lyndell Blevins of Grandview; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church of Lamoni, IA on Monday, July 13. Interment was at Rose Hill Cemetery in Lamoni. Arrangements were under the direction of Slade-O’Donnell Funeral Home in Lamoni, IA.
