Sarah Ruth Brelsford

Sarah Ruth Brelsford, age 100, of Kansas City, MO, passed away Wednesday night, Nov. 1, 2017, at Garden Valley Nursing and Rehab in Kansas City. It was on Nov. 18, 1916, that the lord blessed the home of Milton Hiram and Hattie (Cooper) Brelsford with the gift of a daughter.

Ruth was raised on the family farm west of Polo, and graduated from Mirabile High School. Following graduation, she obtained her teaching certificate from Warrensburg State Teacher’s College. Ruth began her teaching career in a one room school in southern Missouri. She later came back and taught at Mirabile Grade School. During the 2nd World War, Ruth moved to Kansas City, where she worked at Remington Arms and Montgomery Wards, where she retired as a secretary in 1981. She also worked at the Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Company during the Korean War, and later as a secretary at Wornall Road Baptist Church. Despite her retirement, she obtained her real estate license at the age of 65 and sold homes well into her 90s.

Ruth was a regular attendee and contributor at church throughout her life. She regularly taught Sunday school classes, and was actively involved in the Christian Business and Professional Women’s Club of Kansas City for several years. Ruth was a member of Metro North Baptist Church. In 2010 she moved to the Garden Village independent living center, where she built friendships and enjoyed helping people (like she did all of her life). Ruth enjoyed going to the Opera with her brother, Hiram.

Ms. Brelsford was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Hiram Brelsford.  Survivors include her brother, Horace Brelsford (Lela) of Kansas City; nephew, Ken Brelsford (Jane) of St. Louis; niece, Diana Staggs (Mark) of Lufkin, TX; great nephew, Michael Brelsford of St. Louis; great nephew, Matthew Staggs (Jessica) of Dallas, TX; great niece, Jessica Staggs of Tyler, TX; close cousin, Joy Coleman of Overland Park, KS; and three great-great nieces, several cousins and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Nov. 6, 2017, at 2:00 p.m., at Prairie Ridge Church, five miles west of Polo. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow the services at Prairie Ridge Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to The City Union Mission in Kansas City in loving memory of Sarah Ruth Brelsford, and may be left at or mailed to Stith Family Funeral Home, 301 E. Elm St., Polo, MO 64671. Arrangements are under the direction of Stith Family Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Polo. An online guestbook may be accessed at www.stithfamilyfunerals.com.
