Terry Lee North

Terry Lee North, age 65, a resident of Powers, OR, passed away June 30, 2015.

Terry was born the son of Melvin and Helen (Simkins) North on July 28, 1949, in Braymer, MO. His mother passed away when he was seven, along with his infant sister. It was a loss that stayed with him his entire life.

In 1967 he enlisted in the US Navy and served on the USS Gurnard as a nuclear reactor operator. He was honorably discharged in 1976, but always kept that time near and dear to his heart. Shortly after his nine years of service in the US Navy ended, he embarked on a successful career of self-employment. He eventually found himself in a little town called Powers, OR, where he continually put himself before others and did whatever he could to help his neighbors. He was elected Mayor and held office from 2000-2002. He was also the president of the local Lions Club.

He was the most intelligent and the best person that anyone could have known. He was a student of life and was always searching for the best answer to all of life’s questions. He once said, “We only need one law in this world; do no harm to others.” If you wish to honor him, that is what he would tell you to do.

Terry enjoyed the water and lived aboard his sailboat for several years in San Diego. He recently purchased a boat with the intention of spending summers cruising with his wife, Debbie, on the Puget Sound.

Survivors include his wife, Debbie, of Powers, OR, of the home; two sons, Justin and Shawn; grandchildren, Austin, Addison and Lucas; one brother, Melvin North, Jr. (Carol) of Humbolt, KS; one sister, Diane Martin of Camdenton; several nephews and nieces, as well as cousins and other family members living in Missouri, Kansas, Texas, Washington, California and Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents, Willard “Bub” and Myrtle North; nephew, Gary North; and aunt, Joan Foley.

Terry was greatly loved and will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held in Braymer, April 2, at 11:00 a.m. at the Lions Building followed by interment in the Enon Cemetery at 2:00 p.m.
