Time to end Covid emergency orders

Emergency orders should be canceled and instead be presented to the legislatures for their approval

Fairfax, Va. - The cold reality is setting in that the Covid virus is no longer a short term emergency, but an ongoing problem. Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning is urging state lawmakers to take a leadership role in addressing Covid and to stop deferring to executive orders from governors. He issued the following statement:

“State emergency orders are supposed to be for short time events where the legislature is unavailable to meet to consider appropriate alternatives. They are not an excuse for state executives to become mini-dictators. Most state legislatures either are in session or will be in session in the weeks ahead and as a result all gubernatorial emergency orders should be canceled and instead be presented to the legislatures for their approval.

"It is unconscionable for governors to cut elected state representatives out of the decision-making process. It is time to recognize that Covid is no longer an emergency and instead should be treated as an on-going problem which should be incorporated into normal spending and budget calculations.”
