Hornet win over Gallatin Bulldogs

The Hamilton Hornets evened their record to 1-1 this past Friday night as Penney High defeated the visiting Gallatin Bulldogs 19-8, giving Caleb Obert his first victory as the head football coach of the Hornets.

Hamilton's Latroy Harper returned the opening kickoff to the Hornet 46 yard line. Two first down runs by T.C. East, and one by Korby Ford, led to a 3 yard touchdown run by Ford with 8:34 on the clock. Mason McFall's kick was good for a 7-0 Penney High lead.

Gallatin started their first possession at the Bulldog 39. After Jaran Richman tackled the receiver for a 2 yard loss, the Bulldogs completed a pass for a first down at the Hamilton 44. However, the Gallatin drive was short lived as Penney High's Latroy Harper intercepted a pass. East registered a first down before Hamilton was forced to punt. The snap was low and McFall was able to scramble to the Hornet 49 yard line before being tackled. Following a quarterback sack by Korby Ford for a 3 yard loss, the Bulldogs were forced to punt. After a first down on the legs of Jaran Richman, Gallatin's Bradley Rhoades intercepted the Hornet pass near mid field. The first quarter ended with Hamilton on top 7-0.

The Bulldogs were forced to punt early in the second quarter. Hamilton began their second quarter possession at the Penney 18. A heavy dose of T.C. East moved the ball to the Gallatin 41, however three consecutive penalties against the home team resulted in a McFall punt. Thanks to a tackle for a three yard loss by McFall, the Bulldogs were forced to punt on fourth and 1. The Hornets were not able to record a first down and punted the ball back to Gallatin. During this Bulldog possession, Tyler Trosper dropped the ball carrier for a 6 yard loss, then Wyatt Gregory intercepted the Gallatin pass on the Bulldog 45. Korby Ford ran the ball to the Gallatin 17, and later scored on an 18 yard reception from Jaran Richman. A low snap prevented the extra point attempt, but the home team led 13-0 with 1:15 remaining in the opening half. The Bulldog's next possession ended with a fumble recovery by Kenny Pulley when the receiver collided with Hamilton's Telly Harper at the Hornet 41. The first half ended with Hamilton on top 13-0.

Gallatin's initial possession in the second half resulted in a punt, but the ball hit a Hornet player and the Bulldogs recovered at the Hamilton 33. Gallatin took advantage of the short field, and quarterback Wyatt Bird ran through the Hornet defense for a 27 yard touchdown. The 2-point conversion pass from Tate Hancock to Caleb Boyd closed the score to 13-8, and 7:03 left in the third period. Following a punt by McFall, Gallatin had a first down at their own 35. After McFall caused a quarterback fumble that was recovered by the Bulldogs for a 7 yard loss, Gallatin got a first down at the Bulldog 48. Soon after, on a lateral, Hamilton's Wyatt Gregory recovered the ball on the Hornet 32.

The fourth quarter started with Penney High ahead, 13-8, and facing a 2nd and 14 at their own 46. A 9 yard pass completion to Telly Harper and an 8 yard pass to Latroy Harper gave the Hornets a first down on the Bulldog 37. Four consecutive runs by T. C. East gave Hamilton a first down at the Gallatin 14. Quarterback Jaran Richman ran it in from their with 9:04 left in the final stanza. The 2-point conversion pass was incomplete, but Penney High was on top 19-8. Neither team was able to score the rest of the way and the Hornets came away with a non-conference victory.
